People who are overweight (and the proportion of our population that is too heavy is increasing daily) have physical reasons why they can’t fall asleep or stay asleep. Snoring and sleep apnea can both be caused by being overweight, and they are important causes of insomnia.

If you are suffering from stress, you may have sleepless nights because of it. Too much stress causes the body to produce adrenaline and other sleep-canceling substances that can keep you awake. Modern life is of course by its very nature stressful, and we add to it with our own personal problems. Many people try to cancel out the stress by watching TV or a computer screen before bedtime, but studies have shown that our brains become overstimulated by the flicker of LCD screens, producing more stress.
